Councillor Mary Lou Eckmeier

Mary-Lou-Davis-smCouncillor Eckmeier was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, moved to Alberta in 1980 and decided to make Cochrane home in 1993. Her three children grew up here and now work, attend university and raise their own families here — or a combination of these depending which year it is.

Councillor Eckmeier has operated a family business in Cochrane, Bentleys Book Store, for 15 years. Prior to that she was in corporate retail. Councillor Eckmeier is currently attending the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in the evening, studying to be a legal assistant.

“The best thing for me about Cochrane is that a person can be out on any day, at any event and see people they know,” says Councillor Eckmeier. “That creates a very strong feeling of community.”

Councillor Eckmeier served as Town Councillor from 2004 to 2007, and decided to run for office again in 2013. “Residents encouraged me to run again,” she says. “They told me they had confidence in me serving as their voice.”

Councillor Eckmeier’s goals as a Councillor are to ensure that members of the community are heard, that she is in touch, face to face with people, and that she honestly represents what she hears from the public.

Cochrane is her home and Councillor Eckmeier is committed to being part of what makes it such a desirable place to live. “Each person decides how to build their home and my way is by being involved in my community,” she says.

Councillor Eckmeier got involved as a Brownie and Cub Scout leader when she first moved to Cochrane. Then she served with the Chamber of Commerce, as a Cochrane Town Councillor and on many municipal and regional boards. At the grass roots level, she conceived of the Cochrane Community Christmas Dinner and hosted it for several years, and more recently coordinated a Charity Christmas Gift Wrap event which takes place in December.

“I believe life is a one shot deal and we are here to enjoy it and to help others find their happiness,” Councillor Eckmeier says. “I am committed to making the most out of every day.”
