MAYOR ISSUES COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE

“We know this is ambitious,” says Mayor Brooker. “Our community fundraising goal of $10.6 million is ambitious, too. But if every person in town contributed $275, we’d get there.”

Brooker says he also wants to show federal and provincial funders the community’s enthusiasm and commitment to the project. “We’ve been talking about and planning this facility for nearly 10 years,” he says. “When we show the construction site to our federal and provincial supporters, it’s also an opportunity for the community to show how excited they are about this project.”

“We are working together as a community to get this done,” says Mayor Brooker. “And in less than two years, we’ll all be able to enjoy this great new facility.”

A community event is scheduled for May 8 to celebrate progress on construction and announce the results of the mayor’s challenge. “I’m excited to see the results,” says Brooker.
“The development and business community in Cochrane have come forward with some great support so far, which we’re thrilled about. I also know some people were waiting until construction actually started – that’s what we’re here to show today.”

The community celebration Friday May 8 includes federal, provincial and local officials, special guests, activities and fun for the whole family.

The mayor’s challenge is open to everyone: individuals, families, groups of friends or work colleagues, corporate and community groups, sports teams and non-profit organizations.

“Rock the Waves has an ambitious fundraising goal,” says Mayor Brooker. “I know we can reach it if we work together as a community.”

The Rock the Waves’ goal is $10.6 million in community contributions and sponsorships.

Total capital budget for the new facility is $45 million, with funding coming from Provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) grants, Rocky View County, Federal Gas Tax Fund and developer Community Enhancement fees.

Anticipated opening of the new facility is spring 2017.

Information and contribution forms can be found on RocktheWaves.ca, as well as partner information, details on the project in general and a timeline.
