COUNCIL APPROVES MOVING FORWARD ON TRANSIT PLANS

The Town of Cochrane is moving ahead to make plans for local transit, with the support of provincial funding.

The Town was approved for $9 million in provincial Green Transit Incentives Program (GreenTRIP) funding in 2011 for the creation of local and regional transit service and construction of a transit terminal. Since the Calgary Regional Partnership is working on regional transit plans, Cochrane can now focus on local service plans.

Council resolved in March 2013 to move ahead with local transit plans as a “manageable first step.” Drew Hyndman, Senior Manager Development Services presented the Transit Feasibility Study — the next step in the process — at Monday’s Council meeting

Plans to implement local transit service addresses many of Cochrane’s sustainability goals, says Hyndman. “Local transit provides mobility options for travel within Cochrane — particularly for people who are unable to drive. It can also connect residents to regional bus services: the existing private commuter services for now, but also future regional transit service.”

The Town received a $75,000 grant from the province under the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund to work on developing the best options for the introduction of transit in Cochrane. The Transit Feasibility Study presented Monday is the result of a study commissioned from experts from Calgary Transit and outlines a phased approach to implement transit in Cochrane.

Administration is planning extensive public consultation before service levels, routes, fares and other details are finalized.

With Council’s approval of the Transit Feasibility Study, Administration will amend the GreenTRIP application to reflect the approach outlined; the Town has until 2021 to use the GreenTRIP funding.
