The Town of Cochrane is reminding dog owners they must carry bags to pick-up after their dogs.
Relying completely on bags provided in dispensers along Town pathways may endanger that program.
“We’ve seen a dramatic increase in consumption of bags from the dispensers,” says Sgt Charlene Ruttle of Cochrane Municipal Enforcement. “An average of 3,000 bags are used every weekend at the multi-use pathway along the river — but we’re fairly certain 3,000 dogs aren’t there.”
Municipal Enforcement is re-evaluating the poop bag supply program because of the increase in costs. “The intention was to provide Cochranites with back-up bags for times when they get caught short,” says Ruttle, “not to provide the only supply.”
The Town is planning to install reminders on the dispensers that dog owners should always carry bags with them, and that the bags in dispensers are a back-up supply only.
