JACK TENNANT MEMORIAL BRIDGE UPDATE: ON TIME AND ON BUDGET

Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge Sep 2019

“On time” and “on budget” are words Town Council heard frequently during an update on the Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge and James Walker Trail project at their meeting Monday.

Work continues on both components of the project this spring with the opening of the bridge and road still anticipated for this fall.

Mayor Jeff Genung applauded the project team for their good work. “This is the most important project in our community at the moment, so it’s essential to get it right,” he said. “It’s exciting to see the progress and to know we’ll be driving on the bridge in a few more months.”

There are number of major items to be completed in 2020 to get the Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge ready for use:

  • construction of approach slabs
  • installation of railings
  • installation of waterproofing
  • lighting installation
  • paving

The James Walker Trail extension from the Arena Road roundabout to Riversong Boulevard is also progressing well. Work resumes this spring and includes completion of the rough grading and storm system, shallow utilities, paving and landscaping.

The update to Council also included fish habitat information. Three new pools were added and the side channel was deepened and cleaned as per Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Both the bridge and road construction are planned to be open to traffic this fall.

BRIDGE PROCUREMENT MODEL WINS AWARD FROM CONSULTING ENGINEERS OF ALBERTA

The Town of Cochrane and Urban Systems were awarded this year’s Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) Award of Merit in the Project Management category for the innovative approach to procurement for the Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge.

The planning process illustrated the important role of the general contractor: they needed to support and collaborate on the design of the bridge as well as build it. The collaborative procurement model resulted in a highly professional understanding of contractual risk responsibility and eliminated uncertainties that often lead to contractual disputes and costly changes.

A release from the CEA says, “Twelve Awards of Excellence and fourteen Awards of Merit were presented at the 24th Annual Consulting Engineers of Alberta Showcase Awards Gala held February 21 in Edmonton. These awards recognize the best-of-the best in engineering design and innovation.”
