Freedom of Information
The Town of Cochrane has closed facilities to the public to extend virus protection for staff and the community. Town staff are working remotely and access to and processing responsive records is occurring but timelines may be affected depending on the complexity and size of the request.
Service Alberta has temporarily extended timelines for public bodies to respond to requests for access to information: instead of 30 days, a public body has 90 days initially to complete a request for access to information (for requests submitted April 9, 2020 or later). We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience during this time. You may ask the Commissioner for a review under section 65(1) if this is an issue. If you require further information please see: https://www.oipc.ab.ca/.
Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP Act) public bodies in Alberta must comply with the FOIP Act when collecting and/or disclosing information. The FOIP Act aims to strike a balance between the public’s right to know and the individual’s right to privacy in regards to information held by the Town.
Right to Request Information
Under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP Act), any person has the right to request information that is in the custody and control of the Town of Cochrane, including their own personal information. Individuals may also request a correction of their personal information if it is inexact, ambiguous or incomplete. Public bodies routinely release a majority of their information. As this information is already available, FOIP is not required. FOIP is meant to complement existing practices for the release of information.
The FOIP Coordinator can be contacted at 403-932-2674, or at FOIP@cochrane.ca to help determine whether the records(s) you want access to are routinely available or if a FOIP request is required: Request and Instruction Form.
