How Cochrane calculates sewer consumption

We calculate sewer consumption based on your water usage. We track the volume of water delivered to your home and use this information to determine the sewer charges on your utility bill.

How your sewer consumption is calculated depends on whether your account has usage history. If you’ve lived in your home from November to April, your account will have an established history.

Residential accounts with history

If you’ve lived in your home from November to April, we calculate your sewer charges using winter averaging:

Your average monthly water usage from November to April is applied as your sewer consumption for May through October. If your water use falls below five cubic metres in any winter month, we’ll use five cubic metres as the minimum for averaging.
If your actual water use between May and October is lower than your winter average, we’ll base your sewer on your actual usage.
From November to April, sewer consumption is billed at 100 per cent of your water consumption.

Winter averaging ensures you aren’t charged sewer fees for outdoor water use during the summer.

Residential accounts without history

If you moved into your house after November and don’t have account history:

Sewer consumption is billed at 100 per cent of your water use from November to April.
From May to October, sewer consumption is billed at 80 per cent of your water use to account for outdoor water activities.
