Construction began in May 2023 and is anticipated to be completed by Fall 2025. This project includes:
- Expanding Highway 1A from two to four lanes (2 lanes in each direction) from just west of Highway 22 to 6th Avenue (east of Big Hill Creek).
- Two new bridges on Highway 1A over Big Hill Creek
- Replacing the Highway 22 CP Rail overpass over Highway 1A with a new larger overpass structure
New interchange ramps and roundabouts connecting highways 1A and 22 as part of the interchange
Throughout construction, Cochrane Protective Services are engaged in regular project updates with the contractor and Alberta Transportation to ensure that emergency access is maintained for all communities as public safety is a top priority.

November 14: 🚧 Temporary Ranche Road Closure – Updated Schedule: November 17–21
As part of the Provincial Hwy 1A & Hwy 22 interchange project, crews will be installing a culvert on Ranche Road near the RancheHouse.
The closure has been rescheduled to November 17–21, weather permitting. This shift allows time for sourcing required materials and ensuring everything is properly prepared for the detour installation.
👉 Access to the RancheHouse remains open from Hwy 22 through a temporary detour:
• From the north: detour through the interchange and back up Hwy 22.
• From the south: use the right-in access.
⚠️ Speed limits on Hwy 22 will be reduced to 30 km/h in both directions, with no passing allowed, to ensure safe entry and exit. Please drive with care.
We know these dates have changed, and we appreciate the community’s patience. We are committed to keeping everyone informed as updates on timelines become available.
Need Town services during the closure? Visit The Station at Cochrane Crossing (360 Railway St W) for in-person payments (property taxes, utilities, animal licences) and general support, Mon–Fri, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
