Alberta Transportation updates
June 15, 2026
Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (ATEC) has provided the following update on construction for the Highway 1A / 22 Interchange project.
ATEC has monitored operations of the new traffic signal at Sunset Blvd for a period of time and can confirm that the traffic signal will be modified. The northbound right turn will no longer be controlled through the traffic signal, but instead will have a small corner island and yield sign, similar to other major intersections in Cochrane and the Calgary region. With this change, drivers must yield to opposing traffic from the southbound left turn when present, but can otherwise proceed at all other times.
Construction update:
- Beginning June 15, crews will start work to convert the northbound Highway 22 to Sunset Boulevard right turn from a signal-controlled turn to a yield-controlled turn.
- Remaining line painting throughout the project site is scheduled to resume the week of June 15.
- Line painting will also include a realignment of the westbound lanes on Sunset Boulevard approaching Highway 22. This change will allow both westbound lanes to feed directly into the dual left-turn lanes, reducing the need for drivers to merge into a single lane before the intersection.
- Most remaining construction activities are expected to be completed within the next three weeks, weather permitting.
- Some landscaping work will continue into July as weather conditions allow.
Localized lane closures, speed reductions and construction access activities will continue for several more weeks. Drivers are asked to drive with caution and obey posted signage.
