UPDATES:

May 16: COUNCIL CELEBRATES PROVINCIAL HWY 1A/22 INTERCHANGE PROJECT

Members of Council gathered to celebrate the Provincial investment in Cochrane’s transportation corridor. This included launching biodegradable confetti cannons, and the ceremonial popping of a bottle of champagne that has been on many a Cochrane Mayor’s desk - waiting for this day.

“Thank you to Alberta Transportation and Town staff for all of the work behind the scenes to get a complex project like this underway,” said Mayor Genung. “And a special thank you to Cochrane residents for your patience and support to get to today – and your patience and support as construction commences over the next few years.”

May 2023: Construction on the Highway 1A/22 Interchange has begun!

Cochrane is getting a new interchange at the Highway 1A and Highway 22 intersection. The new interchange will improve the flow of traffic and accommodate the Town’s expected growth. Construction on this project is anticipated to take about 3 years to complete.

What you should expect to see in the upcoming weeks:

🚧    Preparation of the construction site by the contractor, including setting up trailers at the west end of the project area, just south of the Cochrane and District Agricultural Society building.

🚧    Excavation and movement of materials, focused on the big hill and the area east of Highway 22 and north of Highway 1A.

No traffic impacts are anticipated due to this work. Please obey the posted speed limit and be aware of the construction area.

We will continue to provide timely updates as work is set to start on other areas of the project.

Dec 2022: Mayor Genung joined the Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors and the Minister of Energy to announce the Government of Alberta has issued a tender for the Highway 22 and 1A interchange. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2023.

Nov 2021:  The Provincial Highway 1A and Highway 22 interchange project scope has expanded to include four lanes from the interchange project on Highway 22 to Sunset Boulevard. Following more than a year of meetings and correspondence with Alberta Transportation, the Town recently learned that the project scope now includes both project ‘gaps’ previously identified by the Town. Cumulatively, these gaps reflect an additional $20 million in transportation investment in our community, bringing the total project budget close to $80M.

  • Gap one includes the stretch of Highway 1A from the Provincial interchange project to the Town of Cochrane Highway 1A improvements project. Gap two is an extension of Highway 22 twinning to Sunset Boulevard, allowing double the traffic volume turning left out of the Sunset neighbourhood.
  • Gap two funding includes a financial commitment from the Town of Cochrane and the private community developer. This includes an upgrade to the intersection at Highway 22 and Sunset Boulevard, funded by the developer through offsite levies.

Oct 2021: As part of the interchange project, Cochrane relocated some utilities within the project site.
