Community volunteer income tax program returns, helping residents file their taxes

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), offered by Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) provides eligible residents assistance with filing their 2024 income taxes.

The program, run by FCSS and supported by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), assists eligible low-income residents with a simple tax situation file their annual income taxes. Working with trained community volunteers, the program helps residents access necessary and applicable government benefits.

“This important service would not be possible without our community volunteers,” says Kim Krawec, Manager of FCSS, Town of Cochrane. “Last year, four volunteers assisted with filing 649 tax returns. The tax assistance provided through this program has positively impacted hundreds of seniors, children and low-income individuals by ensuring they receive all obtainable benefits.”

To qualify to receive tax support through CVITP residents must meet the following gross annual income eligibility criteria:

• 1 person $35,000
• 2 people $55,000
• For each additional person in the household the financial eligibility criteria increases by $2,500

For those who do not qualify for the program, there is an Income tax basics workshop offered at The Station on Thursday, March 19. Registration available on our website at cochrane.ca/programguide.
