Election day is October 20!

You are eligible to vote if you:

• are at least 18 years old; 
• are a Canadian citizen; and
• your place of residence is located in the local jurisdiction where you are voting on election day

Remember to bring identification that shows both your name and current address.  See the list of Authorized Identification (pdf). 

In order to vote, you must prove your identity and address.

You will need to provide government issued ID that includes your photo, current address and name. If you are unable to produce government issued identification, you will need to produce one piece of identification (as approved by Returning Officer under the Election Act) that establishes your name and current address.

If you are only living in Cochrane temporarily (example: just for the school year) and you normally live in another community, plan to return home to vote or contact your home municipality for voting options.

Cochrane has measures in place to ensure residents’ information is protected.  Cochrane does collect some information from residents to support the administrative requirements of the local authorities election process. All personal information collected during the election is managed in compliance with the privacy provisions of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Yes, property ownership is not the determining factor on who can vote. All citizens who meet the eligibility to vote requirements, as per the Local Authorities Election Act, are eligible to vote.

No. You would not meet the eligibility criteria of the Local Authorities Elections Act as your place of residence must be located in the Cochrane on Election Day.

No, you may be a resident of only one place at a time for the purposes of voting under Local Authorities Election Act.

If a person has more than one residence, the person shall designate one place of residence for the purposes of the Local Authorities Election Act in the following order of priority:

1. the address shown on the person’s driver’s licence or motor vehicle operator’s licence issued by or on behalf of the Government of Alberta or an identification card issued by or on behalf of the Government of Alberta;
2. the address to which the person’s income tax correspondence is addressed and delivered;
3. the address to which the person’s mail is addressed and delivered.
